This could be Stillwater’s best weekend of wrestling this year, as the Cowboys host Northern Iowa at 7 p.m. Saturday and Iowa State at 2 p.m. Sunday in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
Northern Iowa hasn’t had a great dual showing this season. The Panthers are 3-5, but they match up really well with Oklahoma State and should provide a solid test for the Cowboys.
Brody Teske and Trevor Mastrogiovanni is a great matchup at 125. It’s possibly a preview of the Big 12 final we’ll see in March. At 141, Cael Happel is a great test for Carter Young, but it’s an attainable upset for Young that could be huge for his seed at the Big 12 tournament.
At 184, it’s a matchup of two All-Americans in Dakota Geer and Parker Keckeisen, and 197 will be the starting debut of Gavin Stika after a much-discussed car accident involving OSU’s AJ Ferrari. The heavyweight match should also be a tough test for Luke Surber, who’s working to build his NCAA tournament resume.
You can watch UNI head coach Doug Schwab preview the dual here at around the thirty-minute mark of the video.
The Iowa State dual sets up to be a great one.
Iowa State has quietly emerged as the No. 2 team in the Big 12, and Oklahoma State will have its hands full without Ferrari.
The Cowboys match up well with Iowa State, but on paper, the Cyclones will be favored at 141, 157, 197 and HWT. The Cowboys will be favored at 125, 133, 165, 174 and 184, but of all of those matches, 133 and 157 are the only two that really heavily favor either team in one direction. You could legitimately see any of the other matches going either way, including 149, which looks like a true toss-up between Kaden Gfeller and Jarrett Degen. But, Gfeller did beat Degen in their last meeting.
Should be a great weekend of wrestling inside Gallagher-Iba. The Cowboys wrestle UNI at 7 p.m. Saturday and Iowa State at 2 p.m. Sunday. Both will be streamed on ESPN+.
