Plank’s 2020 NFL Mock Draft 2.0

Mock Draft 2.0

1. Bengals – Joe Burrow, QB, LSU – If Tua was 100% healthy without any issues in college then maybe this is a different conversation. I am still very curious to see if there is a market for Andy Dalton or if he is viewed as someone who can stay around to help groom Burrow. NEEDS: QB/OL/LB/S/TE

2. Redskins – Chase Young, DE, Ohio State – The best defensive player in the draft is a new toy for defensive minded head coach Ron Rivera. Former college teammate Nick Bosa thinks that Young could average 10 sacks per game just on his speed rush alone. NEEDS: OL/CB/LB/WR/TE

3. Lions – Jeffrey Okudah, CB, Ohio State – I think there is still a chance that the Lions take Isiah Simmons here. Okudah is a natural and after moving on from Darius Slay it feels as if this is inevitable for Detroit. NEEDS: CB/Edge/OL/WR/RB

4. NY Giants – Isiah Simmons, LB, Clemson – Again, David Gettleman has NEVER drafted an offensive lineman in the first round. He prides himself on trying to find value in later round offensive linemen. NEEDS: OL/CB/Edge/WR/K

5. Dolphins – Justin Herbert, QB, Oregon– Here is the first wow moment of the night. The Dolphins need a franchise quarterback and the injury history with Tua is just too much to overcome. Plus, even with the injury concern the thought is that many in the Dolphins front office have Herbert graded higher. NEEDS: QB/OL/S/Edge/WR

6. LA Chargers – Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Alabama – If the Chargers are truly sold on Tyrod Taylor being the starting quarterback this season, then this is a perfect fit for Tua. He will not be rushed into the starting role and can spend essentially a redshirt season getting healthy and adjusting to the NFL game. NEEDS: QB/OL/S/Edge/WR

7. Panthers – Derrick Brown, DT, Auburn – I’m still a big believer that there could be a surprise here. With the retirement of Luke Kuechly, it would not shock me to see the Panthers move down or even draft a linebacker that is not projected to go in the top ten. But in this instance, a true game changing interior defender is hard to pass on especially since the position is so think with difference makers in this draft. NEEDS: DL/CB/LB/OL/S

8. Cardinals – Tristan Wirfs, OT, Iowa – This is a potential spot to start seeing skill players come off the board to continue to build the offense around Kyler Murray. But, as enticing as a Jeudy or Lamb may be here the Cardinals play it safe in building the offensive line to protect QB1. According to reports, Murray has been pushing hard for the Cardinals to draft his former teammate CeeDee Lamb. NEEDS: OL/Edge/CB/LB/DL

9. Jaguars – CJ Henderson, CB, Florida – Henderson has been shooting up draft boards. I think Kinlaw could be a possibility here or even a Jordan Love if the Jags want to go with a quarterback. NEEDS: CB/Edge/DL/OL/RB

10. Browns – Jedrick Wills, OT, Alabama – The Browns have had an incredible off season with Kevin Stefanski taking over as head coach and a solid free agent haul including Right Tackle Jack Conklin. Wills provides an anchor on the left side to protect Baker Mayfield. NEEDS: OL/LB/DL/Edge/WR

11. Jets – Mekhi Becton, OT, Louisville – Despite having its choice of wide receivers, the Jets choose to protect the blind side of Sam Darnold. The Jets can count on the deep receiver class and will pick from a group that will include names like Laviska Shenault, Tee Higgins, or even Jalen Reagor as a 2nd our 3rd round receiver. NEEDS: OL/WR/Edge/CB/RB

12. Raiders – CeeDee Lamb, WR, Oklahoma – Mike Mayock and John Gruden are looking for culture guys. The Raiders get the first choice of all available receivers on the board and choose a playmaker who becomes the immediate #1 receiver on the roster. If CJ Henderson happens to fall out of the top 10, then there is a great chance they end up drafting the cornerback out of Florida before addressing the receiver void. NEEDS: WR/CB/LB/OG/S

13. 49ers – Henry Ruggs, WR, Alabama – The 49ers might look to plug the hole filled by the Buckner trade, but with Ruggs in the fold it is yet another toy for Kyle Shanahan to build around. NEEDS: WR/CB/OL/DL/LB

14. Buccaneers – Andrew Thomas, OT, Georgia – The move for Tom Brady thrusts the Bucs into win now territory. Tampa is already loaded with weapons so the focus must be on building the line to protect Brady. A small part of me would love to see Tampa go running back here and pair a player like Deandre Swift or Johnathan Taylor with Brady, Chris Godwin, OJ Howard, and Mike Evans. NEEDS: OL/DB/DL/RB/QB

15. Broncos – Jerry Jeudy, WR, Alabama – The Broncos under John Elway have made a 1st round trade in 4 of the last 8 drafts. Do not count on Elway filling the need at linebacker early because the Broncos have not drafted a linebacker before the 4th round since he took over as General Manager in 2012. NEEDS: WR/CB/OL/LB/DL

16. Falcons – Xavier McKinney, S, Alabama – Just to be clear, I do not think Atlanta will be picking here and I think they will be doing everything they can to move up to get secondary help. If they end up picking at 16 then its either the 3rd best cornerback on the board or potentially the first safety off the board. NEEDS:DB/Edge/LB/OG/RB

17. Cowboys – Cesar Ruiz, C, Michigan – With the retirement of Travis Frederick, the Cowboys fill the need at Center now with the top interior offensive lineman in the draft. Jerry Jones has picked a Pro Bowler in the first round in 7 of the last 9 drafts. NEEDS: CB/Edge/OL/WR/LB

18. Dolphins – Josh Jones, OT, Houston – The Dolphins fill need number one with Herbert as the franchise quarterback with its top pick. Now they continue to build around Herbert with Jones. NEEDS: QB/OL/S/Edge/WR

19. Raiders – Kenneth Murray, LB, Oklahoma – Again, the Raiders are building a culture, and Kenneth Murray is a perfect fit for what Mayock and Gruden are looking for. Sure, the Raiders signed two linebackers in free agency, but Murray gives them a guy they can cut loose on the field to just make plays. NEEDS: WR/CB/LB/OG/S

20. Jaguars – Javon Kinlaw, DT, South Carolina – There are just two interior defensive lineman that have first round grades, Derrick Brown and Javon Kinlaw. Kinlaw was a 3-year starter at South Carolina but may fall slightly based on his inconsistency and what was viewed as some struggles with his technique. NEEDS: CB/Edge/DL/OL/RB

21. Eagles – Justin Jefferson, WR, LSU – In 7 of the last 9 drafts, Eagles GM Howie Roseman has drafted a trench player. Philly has also traded up 5 times in the Roseman era but have gone three years without drafting a Pro Bowler in the first round. I could easily see the Eagles go Patrick Queen here to fill the need at linebacker, but with a desperate need at wideout Jefferson can be plugged in as a day one starter and playmaker. NEEDS: WR/LB/S/OL/RB

22. Vikings – K’Lavon Chaisson, LB, LSU – The Vikings have a big need at cornerback and could potentially go either AJ Terrell or Tevon Diggs but a playmaker like Chaisson helps add another explosive player with an eye on drafting a wide receiver at 25. NEEDS: CB/WR/Edge/OG/S

23. Patriots – Patrick Queen, LB, LSU – The Patriots have not drafted a defensive player in the first round since taking Malcom Brown with the 32nd pick in the 2015 NFL Draft (side note… that was also the last Texas Longhorn to be taken in the first round). Queen gives New England a playmaker from day one and even though it would be enticing to take a quarterback here the Patriots get a leader for its defense. NEEDS: QB/LB/Edge/DL/TE

24. Saints – AJ Terrell, CB, Clemson – The Saints boast maybe the most complete roster in the NFL, so why not go ahead and draft your quarterback of the future? Instead of going Jordan Love or Jalen Hurts at this point, the Saints decide to add to its secondary with Terrell. NEEDS: CB/LB/WR/OL/QB

25. Vikings – Denzel Mims, WR, Baylor – The Vikings moved on from Stefon Diggs and Mimms has been one of the fastest risers over the last few weeks. There were concerns about the number of drops that Mimms had during his Junior season at Baylor, but it was discovered that he played with a broken hand most of the season. I still think there is a chance Brandon Aiyuk could be drafted here but he underwent surgery last week to repair a core injury so it is hard to determine how that could affect his draft stock. NEEDS: CB/WR/Edge/OG/S

26. Dolphins – De’Andre Swift, RB, Georgia – The Dolphins have added a franchise quarterback, a starting left tackle, and now get a playmaker at running back. AJ Epenesa could end up being in play here, but the Dolphins will continue to build its offense around Herbert. NEEDS: QB/OL/S/Edge/WR

27. Seahawks – Yetur Gross-Matos, OLB, Penn St – The Seahawks did not get much from LJ Collier last year and desperately need help off the edge. Gross-Matos appears to be just scratching the surface with his ability. NEEDS: Edge/OL/DL/CB/WR

28. Ravens – Zach Baun, LB, Wisconsin – Despite a diluted sample from a drug test at the NFL Combine, Baun is a perfect fit in Baltimore. NEEDS: WR/LB/Edge/OG/S

29. Titans – Jeff Gladney, CB, TCU – This might be a bit of my Big 12 bias, but I do not see much difference between Gladney and every cornerback after Okudah. NEEDS: Edge/CB/DL/OL/RB

30. Packers – Jordan Love, QB, Utah State – The Packers have drafted only one wide receiver in the first round since 1989… Javon Walker in 2002. With Love still available, the Packers will look to fill the receiver void in the 2nd and 3rd round and get the heir apparent the Aaron Rogers with the Utah State product. NEEDS: WR/DL/LB/OL/TE

31. 49ers – Ross Blacklock, DT, TCU – I don’t think that the 49ers will pick here and there is a very good chance that a team trades up into the first round to potentially grab a quarterback. But if the 49ers are drafting here, they help to fill the void left from the DeForest Buckner trade. NEEDS: WR/CB/OL/DL/LB

32. Chiefs –Trevon Diggs, CB, Alabama – If the Chiefs end up drafting here, it will be just the second first round pick the Chiefs have made since 2015. Diggs fills a need and could be a day one starter. (CB/LB/RB/Edge/OL)
